Caring for your Horse Hair Jewelry

With proper care your horse hair jewelry will bring you great joy for many years to come.  Beautiful examples of hair jewelry from the early 1800s are still in excellent condition.

Treat your horse hair jewelry as you would precious stones and wear it for occasions other than mucking stalls or fixing fences.  Avoid wearing your jewelry in situations where it could be cut, burned or snagged.

To clean your horse hair jewelry simply wash in warm water with a mild shampoo.  Do not soak your horse hair jewelry as it could cause the adhesive to weaken.  Rinse in warm running water to remove all soap residue.  Pat dry with paper towel and set aside to air-dry on a clean surface.  Lemon juice may be used to polish the silver without hurting the horse hair.
